Why Historical Fantasy?
They say to write what you want to read, and there’s nothing I love more than history and fantasy. What better way to pay homage to my two passions by combining them?
Fantasy has always been a big part of my life. It’s one of my parents favorite genre’s so I grew up with their collection at my fingertips. Before I became a big reader, my father would take the time to read to me. Some of my favorite memories are between the two of us curled up with a book. When I listened to the naysayers telling me I wasn’t smart enough to read, he ensured the passion stayed alive, even if he didn’t realize it. It’s something I’m beyond grateful for.
Our reading time wasn’t just restricted to fantasy titles. I can’t remember exactly when my love of history came to life, but I suspect I was around this time as well. When we weren’t reading fantasy stories, he would read American Girl novels to me; specifically Felicity’s books. I was obsessed with these stories. It wasn’t just the stories themselves I fell in love with, but the time period. The dresses. The history of it all. I was that strange kid that wasn’t all that interested in visiting Disney. I wanted to go to Williamsburg.
As I grew older, and our reading time waned, my dad and I would find the time to watch documentaries together. Nothing was more fun than discussing our theories for some of the mysteries of the past. Even now, when I watch something truly fascinating, I find myself shooting off an email to my dad, telling him my theories and waiting on pins and needles for his response.
Being able to combine both history and fantasy brings all the love I have from my youth and inner nerd to the surface. I write for enjoyment, for the love of storytelling. What better way to share that love with the two topics that mean the most to me?
